Rethinking Corporate Catering for Smaller Offices: A Fintech Case Study

When we think about exceptional workplace dining, we usually imagine a large corporate cafeteria with multiple live counters, elaborate menus, and dedicated food operations teams. But what happens when a company holds those same high standards for a smaller office? That was exactly the challenge for one of India's leading fintech companies.
Headquartered in Bengaluru, the company has offices located across major tech and financial hubs in India, including Mumbai, Pune, Gurugram, and Hyderabad. With a workforce of over 9000 people, the organization had already invested heavily in creating thoughtful employee experiences across its larger campuses, including high-quality corporate catering and well-managed office cafeteria programs.
When it came to their Pune office, the company wanted to maintain the same standards, even while operating with a much smaller workforce of around 250 employees.
For this company, corporate catering wasn't a facility checkbox, it was a people priority. And the existing setup wasn't meeting that bar.
The Challenge: Creating a Premium Corporate Catering Experience in a Smaller Office
The Pune office was facing several operational and employee experience challenges at the same time.
Inconsistent Food Quality The existing food partner was unable to consistently meet expectations around taste, freshness, and overall food quality. Over time, this directly affected cafeteria engagement. Employees began losing trust in the dining experience, and complaints became increasingly common.
Menu Fatigue The cafeteria menu lacked variety, which made daily meals predictable and uninspiring. Many employees started bringing food from home instead of relying on the office cafeteria for daily meals.
Limited Scale, High Expectations Smaller offices often struggle to deliver the same cafeteria menu variety and service quality as larger campuses. Lower employee footfall can limit menu planning flexibility, vendor investment, and food variety. However, the company wanted the Pune office cafeteria to deliver the same thoughtful, premium workplace experience as its larger campuses, despite operating with a much smaller workforce.
SmartQ's Food Program Approach

SmartQ partnered with the company to redesign the workplace dining experience with a stronger focus on quality, consistency, and employee engagement.
Instead of treating the Pune office as a limited-scale cafeteria operation, the approach focused on creating a more intentional and experience-driven food program.
The solution combined improvements in food quality, smarter menu engineering, curated dining experiences, and initiatives designed to make the cafeteria feel more fulfilling and engaging for employees.
The focus shifted from simply serving meals to designing a dining experience that employees would actively choose – one built on consistency, variety, and moments that made the cafeteria worth revisiting.
The Impact
The transformation led to measurable operational improvements as well as a noticeable shift in how the cafeteria experience was perceived internally. Higher engagement, stronger trust in food quality, and sustained participation helped turn the cafeteria into a more valued part of the workplace experience.
